They Weren't Fools. That's the Problem.

Torches of Freedom, Part 7 of 9. The history is the easy part. This one asks what it means. — Kiler Davenport

Here's a question you may have already asked yourself, quietly: would I have fallen for it?

Be honest. Most of us think no. We think we'd have seen through the staged parade, the planted press, the borrowed slogan.

Let's take the reel's headline seriously: women thought they were choosing, but the choice was made for them. That's true, and it's incomplete. The feminism of 1929 was real. The desire for equality was real. The taboo against women smoking was a real injustice. Bernays didn't invent a longing for freedom. He attached his client's product to it, like a hitchhiker on something authentic.

That's what makes the method so durable. The feeling is genuine. The cause is just. The product rides along inside both. Those women weren't fools. They were used, and that's worse, because it means intelligence is not a defense. The manipulation doesn't go through the intellect. It goes through identity.

Did Bernays believe his own philosophy? Apparently yes, which is its own indictment. The "invisible government" wasn't a conspiracy theory to him. It was a job description.

And the coda nobody expects: after semi-retiring, Bernays went to work against his old client, advising an anti-smoking group and supporting anti-tobacco efforts. Remorse, strategy, or vanity, he never really said. But the damage was measured in a lot of graves.

The hard truth: "freedom was a lie" is not quite right. The freedom was real. The cigarette was the price of admission to a feeling of freedom manufactured in a boardroom. Name the mechanism exactly, because it's still running.

Part 8: where the mechanism lives now. It has your screen, your data, and a lot more precision.
