Factory Settings

From the desk of Kiler Davenport. The Manufactured Divide, Part 3 of 7. We've seen the paper trail. Now the uncomfortable question: why does it work on smart people?

Think of the last time you got truly furious online. Remember how it felt. Not confused, not sad. Clear. Righteous, even. The anger felt like seeing the situation for what it was.

That feeling is real, and nothing is wrong with you for having it. Humans are tribal. We evolved in small bands where belonging meant survival and exclusion meant death, so the brain treats social threat like physical threat. Moral outrage feels like virtue. Fear of the out-group feels like vigilance. Contempt for the other side feels like clarity. Those aren't character flaws. They're factory settings.

Now the hard truth: the machine doesn't fight those settings. It farms them.

  • Identity first, facts later. Attach a position to who you are, and changing your mind starts to feel like betrayal.
  • The enemy is vivid, the ally is abstract. You'll scroll past a thousand policy papers for one video of someone on the other side saying something appalling, and the feed knows it.
  • Isolation amplifies everything. Someone embedded in a real community meets the other side as people: the guy who pushed your car out of the snow, the one who shows up at funerals. Someone alone with a feed meets the other side as caricatures. The machine profits most from the isolated, so it isolates.
  • Exhaustion is the goal. It doesn't need you to believe the lie. It needs you too tired, confused, and distrustful to act together.

That's why so many people are now afraid to be open-minded around each other, for fear no one will like them. That fear isn't a cultural accident. A population that polices itself into silence doesn't need censors.

Next: the receipt. What all this has actually cost us, in numbers you can check. And one number in there that changes everything.
