Sell the Enemy, Not the Cigarette

From the desk of Kiler Davenport. This is The Manufactured Divide, a seven-part series on how the machine that sold cigarettes learned to sell hatred, and the documented way back to each other. Part 1 of 7.

You've felt it. You open your phone to check one thing, and inside a minute somebody has made you angry at a person you will never meet. You walk into a room and sort the people in it by what you assume they'd say. You've caught yourself swallowing an honest thought because you couldn't predict how it would land.

That isn't weakness, and it isn't paranoia. You are reacting to a real environment, and your reaction is rational. Plenty of decent people are doing the same thing right now and thinking they're the only ones.

Here is the hard part. In 1929, Edward Bernays worked out that you don't sell the cigarette. You sell the identity and let the cigarette ride along. The "Torches of Freedom" worked because the feeling was real. Women genuinely wanted liberation, and the product attached itself to that feeling like a parasite.

Now change the formula by one word. Instead of attaching a product to an identity, attach an enemy. Don't sell the candidate, sell the threat. Don't sell the outrage, sell the tribe, and let the advertiser, the campaign, or the foreign operative ride along.

That is the last seventy years in one sentence. The machinery built to manufacture desire was retooled to manufacture division, and it worked well enough that most Americans now fear their neighbors more than they trust them. That is exactly the condition under which people are easiest to steer.

So the fear you feel at the table, in the comments, in your own head, is not a verdict on your neighbors. It is the product doing what it was designed to do.

Next time, the paper trail: memos, whistleblowers, Senate reports. None of it is theory, and all of it is documented. Stay with me.
