The Reel Is Right About the Wound. Now Let's Check the Rest.

BEFORE COLUMBUS — Part 1 of 9. We took a viral Black-history reel and checked it claim by claim. Documented. Disputed. Unsupported. No flattery, no erasure.

You've seen the video. A man outdoors, phone in hand, maps flashing behind him, telling you Black history didn't start on a slave ship.

And something in you says: finally.

That reaction is earned. Most of us were handed a story where Africa is a prologue and the real plot begins in chains. Anyone who spends one afternoon with the actual record knows that's a distortion.

So the reel's instinct is sound. Its argument is a corrective, and correctives deserve a fair hearing: great empires in Africa, gold, universities, and, the reel says, Black civilizations in the Americas before Columbus, with African ships crossing the Atlantic ahead of Europe.

Here's the hard part. That argument is three different things stapled together. Some of it is rock solid. Some of it is half-true in fascinating ways. And some of it collapses the moment you check it.

That matters, because the true parts are so spectacular they don't need the shaky parts holding them up. Every weak claim you repeat hands a critic a reason to throw out the strong ones.

Over the next eight parts we sort it honestly. The wound is real. The golden age is real. A few of the specifics are not.

Next: why a man is shouting this into a phone in the first place, and the century-long machinery that made him need to.
