Freud's Nephew Read the Crowd Like a Blueprint

Torches of Freedom, Part 2 of 9. Part 1 told you what happened on Fifth Avenue. This one is about the man who engineered it, and the idea he built his career on. — Kiler Davenport

Ever notice how the people who sell to you seem to know you better than your friends do? You mention something once, and suddenly it's everywhere. You've felt that chill and told yourself it was coincidence.

It's not paranoia to notice. It has a lineage, and the lineage has a name: Edward Bernays.

Born 1891, died 1995 at 103. He was Sigmund Freud's nephew twice over: his mother was Freud's sister, his father was the brother of Freud's wife. He grew up next to the birth of psychoanalysis and drew a conclusion that should make anyone sit up. If people are driven by unconscious desire instead of reason, then whoever understands the desire can steer the crowd.

His training ground was war. In World War I he worked for the Committee on Public Information, the government outfit that sold America's entry into the conflict as a crusade to "make the world safe for democracy." He watched a government manufacture public consent at scale, and he took the method home and put it to work for private profit. He even gave the job a name: public relations counsel.

In 1928 he wrote a book and titled it, with no apology, Propaganda. In it he argued that the conscious, intelligent manipulation of the masses' habits and opinions was an important part of democratic society, and that those who pull the unseen levers form an "invisible government."

Hear what that is. It's not a leak. It's not a whistleblower. It's a man proudly publishing the manual, convinced that ordinary people were too irrational to be left unsteered. His own memoirs say he was shocked to learn Joseph Goebbels kept his work in his library. The technology doesn't care who's holding it.

Part 3: the client, the problem, and the number that kept a tobacco king awake at night.
