Documented, Disputed, Unsupported: The Honest Scorecard on the Hospital Critique
This is Part 8 of 9 in the series The Healing Machine That Forgot How to Heal. Here’s the full scorecard on everything we’ve covered. One post to the finish.
This is where The Lone Wolf shows its work.
DOCUMENTED
- Ulrich (1984, Science): tree views mean shorter stays, less pain medication, and fewer complications.
- Morning sunlight shortens stays in cardiac ICU, bipolar disorder (3.67 days), and depression (30 days, small study).
- ICU light levels are circadian-inadequate (median 64 lux, never above 150). Delirium tracks disordered melatonin and cortisol rhythms.
- Tuned LED lighting halved nighttime sleep disturbances in a randomized nursing-home trial.
- Nobel 2017 for circadian mechanisms. Night-shift work is classified a probable carcinogen. Blue light suppresses melatonin.
- Hospital noise routinely doubles WHO guidelines. About 1 in 31 inpatients has a healthcare-associated infection. Preventable harm is large, though the exact toll is disputed.
- U.S. spending is about $5 trillion with poor peer-comparison outcomes. DRG payment means longer inpatient stays cost hospitals money.
DISPUTED / PRELIMINARY
- Grounding: small pilot studies, industry funding, no mechanism. Unproven.
- EMF at hospital exposure levels: no established mechanism. WHO Group 2B. The reel’s certainty exceeds the science.
UNSUPPORTED
- That hospitals deliberately keep patients sick for profit. The neglect is better explained by inertia, capital constraints, reimbursement design, and the unprofitability of unpatentable inputs.
That’s the discipline. We don’t take the whole clip or leave the whole clip. We sort it.

Next up, Part 9 of 9: The Overhaul. The final post turns the evidence into a design brief for the hospital the science has been asking for since 1984.
