Infrastructure, Not Physics

WHO'S HOLDING THE PEN — Part 6 of 7. From the desk of Kiler Davenport.

You know the line: "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." It's from 1984, and it gets quoted like a spooky slogan.

Read it again as a systems statement.

Orwell wasn't writing about time travel. He was writing about the mechanics of record-keeping: who holds the archives, who decides what stays, who gets to quietly fix yesterday so it matches today's story. In his novel it was a ministry with memory holes. Today it's something far more boring and far more efficient: a handful of companies, a few thousand servers, and a permissions setting.

That's what makes it uncomfortable. The machinery isn't sinister-looking. It's convenient. We chose it because it's fast and searchable and free.

Now run the test I started this series with. If a date, a quote, or a photo caption changed on every server tonight, what would you check it against? Your memory says one thing, every screen says another, and we've spent ten years training ourselves to trust the screen.

The hard truth: the Mandela Effect is a rehearsal. The real question isn't why we misremember. It's what happens when there's nothing left to remember against.

Orwell wrote about infrastructure. So the answer has to be infrastructure too. Final part tomorrow.
