The Waiting Room

You've been checking the horizon.

The election. The economy. The movement, the leader, the collapse, the breakthrough, the plan. Every few weeks there's a new thing that's supposed to turn it all around, and every few weeks you find yourself leaning toward it, hoping.

That's not weakness. When a problem is this big, hoping somebody competent is handling it feels like the only sane move. Nobody wants to believe the whole load is sitting on them.

But look at the room you're in. Some people are waiting on politicians. Some are waiting on "white hats," the story that secret good guys inside the system are about to swoop in and fix everything. Different costumes. Same posture: sitting still, eyes on the horizon, waiting to be saved.

Waiting is not neutral. Waiting is a decision not to act, and you make it a little more every day you tell yourself something is coming.
