The Receipt
From the desk of Kiler Davenport. The Manufactured Divide, Part 4 of 7. We know the machinery and the psychology. Here is what it has cost.
You already sense it. The country feels colder than it used to. People who once argued over the fence now don't speak. You don't need a study to tell you something has worn thin.
But the studies agree with you, and they are blunt.
- Trust in government: 73% in 1958. By 2025, Pew had it at 17%, among the lowest readings in nearly seven decades of polling.
- Trust in each other: only 34% of adults say most people can be trusted (Pew).
- Trust in institutions: Gallup's 2026 confidence measure across 14 major institutions averaged 27%.
- Trust in media: at an all-time low, with 28% expressing much trust in newspapers, TV, and radio.
- Loneliness: the Surgeon General's 2023 advisory called it a public health epidemic, with health risks comparable to smoking.
- Despair: 83% say the country has turned away from its founding ideals, and more than a third say violence might be necessary to get it back on track (NPR/PBS/Marist).
That is a nation dissolving its own social glue.
Now the number that matters most. More in Common's "Hidden Tribes" research found an Exhausted Majority: roughly two out of three Americans who are fed up with polarization, flexible in their views, and convinced common ground is possible. The loud voices come from the wings, about a third of the country, the most rigid and the most online. The feed shows you the wings and tells you that's America.
It isn't. The hard truth cuts both ways: the damage is real, and so is the tired, decent majority the algorithm keeps out of your sight.
Next: the way back. It isn't a mystery, it has been tested, and it starts with a very ordinary thing: a room.
