The Spot Behind Your Ear That Makes You Leave Your Body

This is Part 6 of 8 in the series The Gateway. So far we've looked at the claims and the paperwork. Now we look at the brain itself.

The most important science in this entire story doesn't come from parapsychology. It comes from an operating-room-adjacent epilepsy ward.

In 2002, Swiss neurologist Olaf Blanke published a paper in Nature that quietly detonated the field. His team was evaluating an epilepsy patient for surgery, with electrodes on the surface of her brain. When they stimulated a spot called the right angular gyrus, part of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), roughly behind the right ear, she repeatedly reported floating above the bed and watching herself lying below. Stronger current, stronger effect: "I see myself lying in bed, from above." Gentle current gave floating, sinking, lightness, limbs in the wrong places.

The TPJ is where your brain integrates signals about where your body is: touch, proprioception, balance, vision. Blanke's interpretation: an out-of-body experience is what happens when that integration fails. The brain loses track of where "I" is and constructs the self at a displaced location.

Neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield saw a cruder version in the 1930s, when stimulating a patient's temporal lobe made her cry out, "Oh God! I am leaving my body."

Follow-up work filled in the picture. Magnetic stimulation of the TPJ impairs people's ability to imagine their own body from outside. People prone to spontaneous OBEs show measurably different own-body processing. The circuitry of self-location is mapped, and it's mechanical.

Now read this carefully, because people misread it in both directions.

It does not prove nothing leaves the body. A brain correlate doesn't disprove an experience's content, any more than finding the visual cortex disproves light.

But it does prove the feeling of leaving the body can be manufactured by pushing the right neural button.

Any honest account of astral projection has to start there. Not end there. Start there.

Next up, Part 7 of 8: The Honest Ledger. One scorecard, three columns: documented, disputed, and unsupported. Every claim in the series, sorted.
