Being Right vs. Being Ready

The outrage economy sells one product above all others: the feeling of being right.

Every dunk, every viral takedown, every comment where you landed the last word delivers a small hit of victory. It feels like progress. It feels like you're fighting back.

It changes almost nothing.

Being right doesn't pay the electric bill. It doesn't stock the pantry, fix the truck, or check on the elderly neighbor when the power's been out for three days. When pressure arrives, nobody's going to ask who won the argument.

They're going to ask who was ready.

"Nobody checks the scoreboard in a crisis."

Here's the trap. The system doesn't need you to lose. It needs you to feel like you're winning, so you keep playing a game whose only real winner is the house.

Readiness looks different. It's quieter and less satisfying in the moment. It looks like:

  • A little money or food set aside
  • Knowing which neighbors have which skills
  • A plan for who checks on whom
  • A clear head that isn't running on outrage

None of that will go viral. All of it will matter.

So here's the honest question for this week: How much energy did you spend being right this year, and how much did you spend being ready?

There's no shame in the answer. Just a choice about what comes next.

They control the narrative. We control the signal.
