The Honest Ledger: Documented, Disputed, Unsupported

DOCUMENTED

  • Binaural beats are a real auditory phenomenon (Dove, 1839). The frequency-following response is established neuroscience.
  • Beat exposure shows real, modest effects on anxiety, pain, and some cognition across multiple meta-analyses. The mechanism is still debated.
  • Robert Monroe was real, documented decades of OBEs, founded a real institute (1974, Faber, Virginia), and patented a real audio process (1975).
  • The U.S. Army really assessed the Gateway program in 1983. McDonnell's 29-page report, declassified 2003, found it theoretically plausible, not proven.
  • The TPJ is the brain's self-location hardware. Stimulating it produces out-of-body sensations (Blanke, Nature, 2002).

DISPUTED

  • Whether binaural beats truly "synchronize the hemispheres." Clinical effects replicate better than the entrainment mechanism.
  • Whether Focus 10 through 21 and beyond correspond to anything beyond deep relaxation plus vivid hypnagogic imagery.
  • Whether OBEs involve anything leaving the body, or a convincing disruption of body-schema processing. The neuroscience explains the feeling completely. It is silent on the metaphysics.

UNSUPPORTED

  • That the CIA "proved" astral projection. It didn't write the report, and the report proves nothing.
  • That Hemi-Sync or the Gateway tapes reliably produce veridical out-of-body perception. No controlled study has shown it.
  • Miracle claims attached to specific frequencies: DNA repair, solfeggio mysticism.
  • Charles Tart's famous random-number experiments with Monroe. Widely repeated in OBE literature, but they survive as reported anecdotes, not published, replicable results. That's exactly the kind of claim that deserved a proper preregistered trial and never got one.

Notice what this ledger is not. It's not a takedown. It's not a sales pitch. It's the map with the borders drawn honestly.

Most people will only ever hear one column. The believers recite the first. The debunkers recite the third. The truth lives in all three at once.
