Your Body May Know Before the Official Story Does
There have been times when everything looked fine from the outside.
The explanation was reasonable. The situation was considered normal. Other people seemed comfortable with it.
But my body was not.
My shoulders tightened before I understood why. My stomach dropped around certain people. Exhaustion arrived in places where I was expected to feel grateful. Relief came when I stepped away from something I had been told was good for me.
For a long time, I treated those reactions as problems to overcome.
I assumed the official version must be more reliable than my own experience. If the job was secure, why did I feel trapped? If the relationship looked healthy, why was I always bracing? If constant productivity was supposed to be fulfilling, why did my body experience it as depletion?
Culture often asks us to distrust what cannot be easily measured or explained.
It rewards endurance and calls it strength. It praises availability and calls it generosity. It normalizes exhaustion and calls it ambition. Then it treats the body’s resistance as weakness, laziness, oversensitivity, or failure.
But the body is not always making an argument.
Sometimes it is simply reporting what life feels like from the inside.
That does not mean every sensation is an unquestionable truth. Fear can be shaped by the past. Stress can distort perception. Our reactions still deserve reflection.
But they also deserve attention.
Lived experience is not less real because it does not match the approved description.
Sometimes your body recognizes the cost of a situation long before your mind finds the language for it.
